Taking Great Photos of Your Children in 5 Easy Steps...

Taking great shots of your children in 5 Steps.
Article by Lucas from clickawish-baby-gift.co.uk

STEP 1 – Burn their energy!

Children can often be extremely hyperactive and will find it difficult to engage in a photo shoot if they're running about all over the place. Keep off the sweets for the day and wait till mid afternoon when they've burned some energy before beginning.

STEP 2 – Pick the right place

Make sure you choose a good location for your shots, there's no point in taking formal shots whilst they're in a playground, they'll be too distracted and will want to play.

Try to choose locations that will provide a good backdrop. Some good places to shoot are at beaches and woods. Try to keep away from messy areas like their bedroom. Lots of objects in the background will distract the focus from your child.

STEP 3 – Get them involved

Once your child is a little more focused and you're in the perfect spot, you'll need to get your child serious about taking photos.

A great way to get them to engage in the activity is to allow them to take photos of you first. Make it a game. Allow them to take photos of you whilst you're 'serious', 'angry', 'sad' and 'happy' then see if they can beat your faces. Always leave the silly faces till last, you'll find once they start the silly faces they won't be able to stop, making it very difficult to get any of the more serious shots.

STEP 4 – The key to the best photos

The best photos are always those of your child laughing uproariously, it really brings out their personality and they will make great additions to your photo album.

Capturing these photos is as simple as doing something silly. Pull a silly face or pretend to hurt yourself (a fake trip or bump to the head always seems to do the trick). Most importantly, make sure you have plenty of film roll and take multiple shots at the same time, this allows you to choose the photo which best captures the moment.

STEP 5 – Vary photography styles

Experiment with your style so that later you can pick the photos that suit you. Some different styles include:

  • Formal shots, ask them to pose and take a photo. Usually best done near the start when the child is most focused.
  • Close-ups. You can really capture the essence of your child by doing close-ups on the face, eyes or even parts of their clothing.
  • Make sure you take some natural shots too, like when your child is playing toys or exploring their environment.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  • Always plan to take low energy photos first and then the higher energy photos later. By this I mean take the formal and more serious photos first whilst your child is more engaged in the activity. As time progresses and your child loses interest you can do the more exciting and fun shots to keep your child interested.

  • In STEP 3 I mention allowing your child to handle your camera. This is a great technique for getting your child involved, however it is likely they'll want to play around with the different buttons and consequently break your camera. If your camera is particularly expensive then buy your child a cheap disposable camera for this task.

  • When you're done taking photos make sure to keep them in an album; in fact sometimes buying an album for your child can be the best way to get them to engage in photo shoots later on. Your child will treasure the album and will want to add more great photos as they go.
